NEWS: EU WTO notification on revised food contaminant levels

The European Union (EU) has notified the World Trade Organization (WTO) Committee on Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures of draft regulations amending Regulation (EC) No 1881/2006 for maximum levels of ergot sclerotiaand ergot alkaloids in certain foodstuffs.

The draft Regulation revises the maximum levels set for ergot sclerotia in cereal grains with the exception of maize and rice and establishes maximum levels for ergot alkaloids in milling products of barley, wheat, spelt, rye and oats, wheat gluten, processed cereal based foods for infants and young children.

The EU is seeking comments on the amendment of the listed products by June 13, 2021; you are invited to send comments and/or concerns to the Market Access Secretariat at aafc.mas-sam.aac@canada.ca as soon as possible before Thursday, June 10, 2021. This will allow sufficient time for the Market Access Secretariat to prepare a Government of Canada position, taking into account, as appropriate, input from industry, for submission to the EU’s WTO Enquiry Point.
